Winter landscapes

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The Wednesday afternoon art classes created mixed-medium landscapes this week.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

We began with creating a horizon line and using watercolors for our sky.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The next step was cutting out trees with scissors and construction paper.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

This required a lot of focus as the scissors became a tool for drawing the trees through the cutting process.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Next was gluing the trees to the landscape.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The final step was to add shadow to the trees with watercolor paint.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone enjoyed learning to mix mediums to create a wonderful winter landscape.

It was fun day for everyone to explore many new ways of using color, shape and line together!

Circular design

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Wednesday afternoon art students recently explored the circle as they created circles with stencils.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students used a variety of stencils and circular objects to create their composition.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students picked their favorite colors to trace and fill in the shapes.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

This step required much concentration as students worked hard to fill in their circles with various colors.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The next step was to add a wash of color over their circle design.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Here are a few examples of their work.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The final step after their image dried was to outline their circles with marker.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

This was an enjoyable yet challenging project for the students as they learned new concepts and developed their skills.

Hearts

dine+5

Students in the Wednesday afternoon art class learned about the artist Jim Dine and his series on hearts.

DSCN1106

Students began their own heart image and the first step was to divide the paper into quarters and create four heart drawings.

DSCN1110

Students began to repeat the heart shape with various colors of watercolor paints.

DSCN1118

Jim Dine loves things. Influenced as a young artist in the 1960s by pop art, he turns objects and images, like hearts, from our everyday lives into the subjects of his work.

DSCN1116

Students continued to build up more layers of color around their hearts.

DSCN1117

For Jim Dine the hearts function as a “sign that one can care, that there is a constant presence of feeling.”

Four Hearts 1969 by Jim Dine born 1935

The heart is also significant in the larger context of Dine’s work—he has returned to this image time and time again throughout his career, using it as a space on which to project his thoughts and emotions.

DSCN1133

The final step was to outline the hearts with various color of marker to high light the heart shape.

DSCN1134

It was interesting to see the many layers of color.

DSCN1131

Everyone enjoyed the process of creating and learning to add color with this project.  Painting is fun!
