Snowflakes

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students at the Willard Hope Center had fun creating snowflakes.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone learned how to create 4-point and 6-point snowflakes.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone worked at creating many sizes of snowflakes.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students learned that this process is called kirigami.  Kirigami are usually symmetrical, such as snowflakes and is a variation of origami that includes cutting of the paper rather than solely folding the paper as is the case with origami.  Typically, kirigami starts with a folded base, which is then cut; cuts are then opened and flattened to make the finished kirigami.

All were proud of their creations.

Here are some examples of the snowflakes made at the Hope Center.

Winter landscapes

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The Wednesday afternoon art classes created mixed-medium landscapes this week.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

We began with creating a horizon line and using watercolors for our sky.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The next step was cutting out trees with scissors and construction paper.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

This required a lot of focus as the scissors became a tool for drawing the trees through the cutting process.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Next was gluing the trees to the landscape.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The final step was to add shadow to the trees with watercolor paint.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone enjoyed learning to mix mediums to create a wonderful winter landscape.

The Wednesday afternoon art class has been busy creating snowflakes.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The process of creating snowflakes begins with basic paper folding.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Creating snowflakes are based on the art of Kirigami  which is a variation of origami that includes cutting of the paper.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES Kirigami are usually symmetrical, such as snowflakes, pentagrams, or orchid blossoms.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone enjoyed creating four-pointed snowflakes.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The final step was to add a bit of glitter to the snowflakes for some sparkle!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone was proud of their creations!

Cat Collage

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Wednesday Afternoon Art students explored collage with non-traditional materials this autumn.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students began with a drawing of a cat using basic shapes. They then transferred their idea into paper shapes which they cut out.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The next step was to cut out and glue all of the body shapes using newsprint.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

This required a lot of focus as students referred back to their initial drawing during the creative process.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students enjoyed the process which was much like creating a puzzle as they made parts and put them together.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The scrap paper box was very handy in adding details to the cats with many different colors.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Here are some examples of the students’ collages.

The shape of flowers

The home-school art class explored creating flowers beginning with the circle shape.

Starting with a circle the students begin to transform the shape into a flower with scissors, removing various shapes to imitate a flower design.

Next the students add various layers of shapes to their flower to create a layered flower design.

With many colors, shapes and sizes to employ into their image students have many choices to make in creating their flower design.

It’s really fun to watch the creative process bloom in these kids as they immerse themselves in making art.

As the flower project continues to grow, so does the students’ confidence in their artistic achievements.

Every child is an artist.  The problem is staying an artist when you grow up.  -Pablo Picasso
