Last month at the Digital Photography Club local photographer, Matt Ramsey, spoke to the group about lighting and basic operational techniques with digital cameras.  Matt’s information was very helpful to everyone in the group.  We hope to have him return soon.

Homeschool Art Classes

Winter Home school art classes were a lot of fun for everyone involved.  Students were exposed to various types of art mediums, ideas and projects over the six winter sessions.

We had two classes: one for kindergarten through fifth grades and another from sixth grade through high school.

Students enjoyed exploring various mixed media projects that used many new art ideas and techniques.

Developing motor skills and visual perception is an important factor in elementary art as students master using scissors and glue.

Concentration and eye and hand coordination are also vital in the developmental process for many art projects.

Older students explored collage and design as they pushed their creative ideas into new directions.

New materials and mediums and new possibilities push students into new opportunities with the creative process.

A big part of our classes is to introduce many new creative possibilities to students to explore and discover on their creative journeys.

Bead Day

On Saturday, November 3, the Art Junction held its first bead workshop.

Participants explored creating clay beads from Sculpey polymer clay.

Exploring was the name of the day as everyone discovered colors and mixing techniques as well as different types of beads to create.

For most of the participants this was a first experience with creating clay beads; everyone learned new techniques and everyone was surprised by how quickly two hours passed for the workshop.

Here are some examples of the beads created on Bead Day.

Exploring Digital Photography at the Art Junction

This summer we have again offered a class on exploring digital photography at the Art Junction.

Participants have been gaining lots of hands-on experience by exploring new techniques.

Participants have been learning to look at the world around them in a new manner, through the rectangle of a view finder, exploring light and composition.

Tonight the class will meet for its third session as they continue to explore the local environment through digital photography.  All of these images were created by class participant and emerging photographer Alec Casto.

Paper mache pottery -week 1

We began our new class creating paper mache pottery this past week.

Participants learned about basic paper folding methods as well as various methods of building pottery.

Materials are very simple to begin with: newspaper and masking tape.

Learning how to create a coil out of paper is very similar to creating a coil out of clay….only with a different medium.

The next step is to learn how to roll up the coil to create the base of the pot.

Just like regular pottery, paper mache pottery is a very hands-on project.

Coiling is a method of creating pottery.  This method has been used in a variety of ways. Using the coiling technique, it is possible to build thicker or taller walled vessels, which may not have been possible using earlier methods. The technique permits control of the walls as they are built up and allows building on top of the walls to make the vessel look bigger and bulge outward or narrow inward with less danger of collapsing.

Next week we will begin the process of building the pottery after creating many coils.
