Drue Roberts

DSCN4348

Drue Roberts graduated from Willard High School in 1993 and went on to study Geology. After graduate school, he became an environmental geologist performing studies at superfund sites, the military and national laboratories. Drue is a self-taught artist who specializes in acrylic painting and has shown his work in Santa Fe, New Mexico and in Ohio. He and his wife have travelled the country and now reside in Granville, Ohio with their two boys.  Drue had a one man show at the Art Junction in the fall of 2012.

Art is an extension of the inner artist and there is always some trepidation in sharing so much of one’s self. “When I think of showing my artwork in my hometown, it simply terrifies me,” Roberts shared. “Here I stand at the midpoint of my life worrying how people I haven’t seen in 20 years will react to it. Much of what I’ve spent my life seeing, analyzing and interpreting is wrapped up in these paintings.” A lot of how he sees the world has been colored by his experiences and the culture that exists in Willard, Ohio.

Winter landscapes

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The Wednesday afternoon art classes created mixed-medium landscapes this week.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

We began with creating a horizon line and using watercolors for our sky.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The next step was cutting out trees with scissors and construction paper.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

This required a lot of focus as the scissors became a tool for drawing the trees through the cutting process.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Next was gluing the trees to the landscape.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The final step was to add shadow to the trees with watercolor paint.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone enjoyed learning to mix mediums to create a wonderful winter landscape.

Autumn landscape

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Wednesday afternoon art classes created a mixed media landscape recently.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

After using watercolor paint for a background, students employed ink for trees and a landscape.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

This required concentration and learning to control the brush.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The final step was to add bright leaf color with sponges.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone enjoyed this project and the opportunity to use many types of media.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The final results were very nice as well!  Maybe you can join us for Wednesday afternoon art classes this winter?

A 2nd grade visit

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Second grade students visited The Art Junction to view the landscape exhibition in October.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Second grade students are learning about landscapes in art class, so, to incorporate this lesson with their local community, they visited an art gallery.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students had the opportunity to learn about landscape art through viewing the work of local artists who have created landscapes.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Landscape art is the depiction in art of landscapes, natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, and especially art where the main subject is a wide view, with its elements arranged into a coherent composition.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

In other works landscape backgrounds for figures can still form an important part of the work. Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather is often an element of the composition.

100_1138-1

Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times microscopic. Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students had a great opportunity to see many types of landscapes from their local environment and experience what it’s like to visit an art gallery.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students enjoyed their visit and learning about art outside of the school building.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

It’s important for students to learn that art is not just a subject in school but a pursuit that can be followed over a lifetime.

landscapes2014

The Art Junction’s Landscape exhibit was a great learning experience for the second grade students to learn about landscapes and to see how artists create and exhibit them.
