Cat Collage

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Wednesday Afternoon Art students explored collage with non-traditional materials this autumn.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students began with a drawing of a cat using basic shapes. They then transferred their idea into paper shapes which they cut out.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The next step was to cut out and glue all of the body shapes using newsprint.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

This required a lot of focus as students referred back to their initial drawing during the creative process.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students enjoyed the process which was much like creating a puzzle as they made parts and put them together.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The scrap paper box was very handy in adding details to the cats with many different colors.

Here are some examples of the students’ collages.

Wednesday afternoon art students recently learned about the artist Pablo Picasso.

seated-dora-maar-1941

Students explored the ideas of figures and shapes and how Picasso placed facial features in non-traditional places to show the human form in new ways.

DSCN1389

Students began by cutting out the outline of a figure.

DSCN1384

Students had to imagine looking at the side view of themselves as they cut out the figure.

DSCN1385

This required a lot of concentration as students thought through all of the shapes needed for their portrait.

DSCN1387

Students used a wide variety of colors, shapes and papers to create their Picasso portrait.

Students evoked similar ideas of shape and color as they had fun with changing the location of facial features on their portraits.

Everyone enjoyed stretching their creative ideas while learning about Pablo Picasso and creating a non-traditional collage portrait.

Autumn afternoon art classes

100_5985

Students in our autumn afternoon art classes explored a variety of methods of making art.

100_5880

Students learned about balloon painting, the process of using a balloon as a paint brush to begin an image.

100_6118

Students also explored collage as a method of making an image.

100_5973

We also developed new skills in drawing.

100_5825

We explored building sculptural shapes using newspaper as a building tool.

100_5913

Students pushed their skills into new directions.

100_5990

The class gave the students a wide exposure to many varied art terms, artists and mediums.  We will be resuming our afternoon classes in mid-January.  If you have a child who is interested, classes will be on Wednesday afternoons for six sessions.  There will be two classes: one for ages 6-11 and the other class for age 12 and up.  Check back in early January for more information.

Drawing Lab -Week 3

DSCN6954

Week 3 found the participants exploring drawing and collage as they combined these two elements together.

DSCN6953

Participants began with a small image to glue to their drawing, and they used it as a starting point for their exploration in drawing.

DSCN6952

Beginning with a drawing prompt is a great way to start a creative investigation which can be a fun method to jump-start the drawing process.

DSCN6950

All of the participants enjoyed this new exercise in creativity.

DSCN6956

Maybe you can join us in a future creative expedition at the Art Junction.
