Symbols

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Hope Center members work to complete their symbol paintings for the Hope Center Auction.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Adding lines, color and texture have been many of the lessons the student members have explored through this year-long project.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Every week we have worked with the students we have had different students work on the paintings which has truly made this work a community effort.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone has learned about symbols in the Christian church and symbols that we encounter in daily life.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Many of the symbols we see we take for granted, and many of the symbols we encounter we really don’t understand their meaning.  Hope Center students have explored these ideas in this project.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

It has been interesting to see what images have drawn the students interest and how they have interacted with the work.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

It has been fun to see them interact and grow as they explore visual art.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Here are some examples of their work in progress.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The next post will show the next step as the students learn how to apply stencils and spray paint to their images.

Painting at the Hope Center

100_6324

We have resumed our painting project at the Hope Center with the students on Thursday afternoons.

100_6337

There is a lot of activity taking place as we continue with our paintings based on Christian symbolism.

100_6323

The members of the Hope Center are actively engaged in the creative process.

100_6338

This project has challenged the students to push their perceived ideas and abilities in art.

100_6320

Adding detail to the symbols seems to challenge the students as they are encouraged to look not at the whole shape but to focus on small areas as they proceed forward with this project.

Symbols of hope

100_5611

Using the theme of symbols, student members of the Hope Center have embarked on a painting project based on the symbols of the Christian faith.

100_5613

Students learned how to transfer the symbol onto canvas using a projected image.

100_5958

Students have been learning how to add detail and texture to the background of their canvas.

100_6064

After tracing their symbols with permanent marker, students have continued to add texture and layers of color to the background of their canvas.

100_6071

This has been a fun process for the students at the Hope Center.

100_5941

This project has encouraged the students to reflect on the symbol and it’s meaning as they add their own input into the paintings.

100_6073

We are taking a break from this painting project until the holidays have passed.  The students are learning that the process of creating a painting requires patience and develops skills, thoughtfulness and understanding.

Art Camp -day 2

100_4680

On day 2 of Art Camp students reviewed their outdoors paintings and used masking tape to cover elements they wanted to save before adding more paint to the images.

100_4679

This process was a new experience for the campers.

100_4695

Campers explored adding thin layers of solid color to allow the previous layers to peek through.

100_4701A close-up of their work in progress.

After adding some some solid color to their paintings, students returned to the studio to create stencil shapes to add to the images and also allow for some drying time.

Stencils made by the campers.

DSCN8897

Everyone enjoyed using the spray paint to bring their stencil ideas to life.

100_4704

Campers really had a wonderful opportunity to explore the creative process through this painting project.

Expressive painting class -week 2

DSCN8816

Participants in the expressive painting class really began to explore many different ways to use paint to express an idea or theme.

DSCN8815

By the end of class everyone had begun to loosen up and try some new painting ideas to begin to bring their thoughts and ideas to life on their canvas.

Expressive painting class -week 1

DSCN8773

The first session of the expressive painting class was lots of fun as participants met each other and became familiar with tools, materials, and our studio space.

DSCN8771

Looking to week 2, participants will add another layer to their image and begin to explore a theme or image(s) to add to their painting.

Painting at the Hope Center -Week 3

DSCN8276

Students continued to add layers of color to their images of hope.

DSCN8268

Learning to use masking tape to create various sizes and widths of lines was a new idea for the students.

DSCN8283

Choosing the right colors to add a new layer is a fun but challenging task.

DSCN8288

The results of the new layer were very exciting to the kids.

100_3841

The next step was to add another layer of lettering using stencils and spray paint.

100_3845

Everyone was excited to learn this process.

100_3853

Multiple layers of lettering and color were added to the images.

100_3861

With immediate results the kids were thrilled with this process.

100_3858

Finally one more layer of color was strategically added to the images.

100_3863

This was a great end to a very fun session of painting for the kids at the Willard Hope Center.

Drawing Lab -Week 5

DSCN7222

Week 5 began using black acrylic paint with an improvised brayer to add paint with strokes.

DSCN7224

This resulted in some very interesting results that were used as a starting point for drawing.

drawing lab #5#1

Working collaboratively, participants created some very interesting drawings.

drawing lab #5#2

One of the problems to work through was to add to what another participant had begun or to ignore what they had done.

drawing lab #5#3

Creative exercises are just that….a project meant to expand boundaries of thinking and doing.

drawing lab #5#4

Craziness leads to fun which leads to new insights into the personal creative journey.

DSCN7225We ended the session with some quick ink wash images.

DSCN7226These quick washes changed up the creative flow of the evening.

DSCN7227

Artist Paul Klee expresses the idea of drawing as “taking a line for a walk”.  Participants learned that making a drawing is first about communicating with yourself as they went for a walk this evening in the drawing lab.
