Don Moore always knew that he would be a military artist; just ask his former Willard High School art teacher, Mr. Charles Casto.

Soldier

In 1968 Don left Willard, Ohio for the United States Marine Corps recruit depot at Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completing boot camp and advanced combat training, he received the military occupation of illustrator/combat artist. Don served 16 ½ years in the Marine Corps before joining the Army in 1984 as an illustrator. Don retired from the military in 1989 with 22 ½ years of service.

Audie

Don’s military career was not limited to being an artist; he was also a drill instructor, presidential bodyguard, and non-commissioned officer in charge of graphic art centers and public affairs sections. These, as well as other military jobs, postings and travel experiences, helped Don build a variety of skills and life experiences.  Wherever Don was stationed, he pursued his passion for art through college and correspondence courses. He also attended many workshops and institutes such as Dynamic Graphics.

Don has received many awards for his artistic skill, service and excellence. His most prized achievements are: induction into the Sgt. Audie Murphy Club, knighted into the Order of St. George, and commissioned an admiral in the Texas navy.

Symbols of hope

DSCN9441

The Art Junction has returned to the Willard Hope Center this fall to offer some creative opportunities to the student members.

DSCN9420

This fall we explored symbols and how many symbols surround us in our daily life.

DSCN9429

We explored combining the various symbols together to create a pleasing design to the students.

DSCN9424

Everyone enjoyed the activity and could easily relate to the symbols we encounter daily.

DSCN9432

Everyone chose different combinations of symbols.

DSCN9427

A symbol is an object that represents, stands for, or suggests an idea, visual image, belief, action, or material entity. Symbols take the form of words, sounds, gestures, or visual images and are used to convey ideas and beliefs. For example, a red octagon may be a symbol for “STOP”.

DSCN9428

These symbol ideas will be used in an upcoming painting project the student members will be participating in.

DSCN9440

Everyone had fun in the creative opportunity and the fellowship we had.

AmandaKiplinger

This month, Amanda Kiplinger, local photographer from Polk, Ohio, will be speaking to the group as she presents her photographic work Buckeye Landscapes at the Art Junction. Amanda will share her passion and interest in photography, which began when she picked up her first camera at the age of twelve. Amanda states in her biography: “Growing up on a dairy farm in Ashland County gave me many opportunities to photograph landscapes, my favorite subject. While other teenagers were busy taking pictures of their friends making goofy faces, I was trying to imitate my favorite landscape photographer, Ansel Adams. Several years later I decided to make my love of photography into a profession.”

NaP-OH-2183

Amanda Kiplinger, landscape photographer from Polk, Ohio, has turned her love for photography into a profession. She has had solo exhibits including one at the National Center for Nature Photography in Toledo.  Amanda has exhibited her images throughout North-Central Ohio, most recently with the Ohio All Media Juried Exhibit at the Coburn Gallery at Ashland University. Amanda not only photographs the landscape, she also writes about nature. She has had many articles with supporting photographs published in Nature Photographer Magazine, as well as photographs only published in Cobblestone Magazine, Michigan-Out-of-Doors, Wyoming Elements, Heart of Ohio Magazine and Truth Consciences Magazine.  Two galleries represent Amanda: Artspace Gallery in Mansfield, Ohio and Art 101 Gallery in Medina, Ohio.  Join us for a gallery talk to view and discuss Amanda’s wonderful images of the beautiful Buckeye State!
